Assignment 4: Raster Graphics

Instructions

Raster Graphics

In this assignment, you will decontextualize an image of yourself and display it in the browser window on top of a full background image.

Foreground Image

Using image editing software, crop and cut an image of yourself out of its original context. Try to do this as cleanly as possible so that the edges of the image do not appear jagged or irregular. When you've finished editing, export the image as a PNG with transparency at three different sizes. The width of the exported PNG files should be 1440 pixels, 960 pixels, and 480 pixels. This will allow you to offer different resolutions of your image for different displays. The height of the image can vary accordingly but should be no less than half and no more than twice the width. Be sure to start with an image file large enough to work with at this scale.

Background Image

Create a background image for your web page that provides a new context for the image of yourself that you cut out. This image should be formatted to 1920 x 1920 pixels (square) and exported as a high-quality JPG. This could be an Arctic landscape, deep under the sea, somewhere in space-it's up to you! Feel free to modify the image using-but not limited toediting techniques we've explored in class.

Web Page

Create a new "index.html" file for your project. Use the <img> element to display your foreground image on the page. The <img> element should include src, alt, width, and height attributes that correspond to the 480 pixel image. Use the <img>element's srcset attribute with x-descriptors to offer your image at multiple resolutions: 1x (480 pixels), 2x (960 pixels), and 3x (1440 pixels). Use CSS positioning other than static to place the image of you along one side of the browser window.

Add the background image to the page with CSS so that it covers the browser window seamlessly and proportionally. Add a caption or title to the page with HTML paragraph or heading text that describes the concept for your image. Style. the text with CSS and, if necessary, add a background color so that it's legible on top of other imagery.

Publishing Your Web Page

Create a new directory called "images" on your i6 account. Publish the web page along with your raster graphic image files to this directory. Your project should be available at: i6.cims.nyu.edu/-netid/images/. Test your files again in the web browser once they are live on the server.

Create a link from the "Raster Graphics" line of your assignments directory to your new web page.

Submitting Your Assignment

Submit the following via NYU Brightspace. More information on submitting files with Brightspace is available here.
