Assignment 1: Case Analysis
A persuasive case analysis based on research 15%: You are required to write a persuasive case analysis based on your own research (not empirical study, meaning you do not need to collect first-hand data). You may choose any case related to the latest issues or debates in your relevant professions, which is broadly related or relevant to your major and your own interests. The case should be related to issues in China, about China or Chinese culture, education, business, economy, etc. It can be cases, events or incidents happened in other countries, including Australia, as long as it relates to China or Chinese society and people in some way.
Length: 800-1000 Chinese characters excluding punctuations, references and the appendix. (Note, MS Word word count includes punctuations. If you use its word count, you may write a bit more).
You need to conduct an extensive search for a relevant case to work on. Then try to gather as much information as possible about the “case” （the person, company or the incident etc.）, preferably through different channels.
Then you need to formulate a theme (opinion) for your analysis and search the literature (academic papers, reports, official data) to locate evidence to support your opinion. Your case analysis should not only explain or describe an issue—it must persuade the reader of your viewpoint. This means you need a clear thesis statement that takes a position on the case you have chosen. Your thesis must be well-grounded in facts and reasoning, which means you should back it up with reliable evidence from your research.
Your case analysis should contain:
1. A clear and accurate case name/title
2. Introduction and case description
• Provide very brief background information about the case.
• Give a very brief description of your case including the key information.
• Highlight the key issues or debates ofthe case, if applicable.
• Introduce the theme of your analysis. What would you like to focus on in your analysis?
3. Case analysis
• Following the theme of your case, provide a coherent analysis of the case, focusing on the “issues” (what is it in dispute? Or what is/are the key issue(s) arising from the case or the causes or consequences hidden behind?)
• Include a thesis statement, showing your personal perspective.
• Your analysis should show a clear personal perspective and your persuasive evaluation or comments on the case instead of just a description of what happened and a list of causes （原因）, consequences （影响或结果） or solutions.
• Do not attempt to cover many points （不要面面俱到）Instead, focus on one particular point of interest and go deeper into the nature of the incident or the hidden themes beneath the surface（确定问题重点，深入分析）.
• Focusing more on supporting your own ideas (evidence) using the readings you have done or comparing with other cases, for example (着重分析论证过程, 提供充足理由).
• Incorporate what you have read (literature search) into your analysis and cite the source when appropriate.
• Include a minimum of 5 references. Among these, most should be used to support your ideas instead of illustrating the case. Include more references when necessary. Do not use more than half English references.
• Where appropriate, you may include suggestions or recommendations in the concluding section. However, these should follow logically from your argument presented in the main body of your analysis, rather than being presented as a simple list of ‘what to do’ or ‘how to do it.’” (解决问题的策略并非重点, 这些应在你前文充分论证的基础上提出，可包括在结论部分)。
4. Include a very brief concluding paragraph.
Notes:
1. Use size 14 font and 2.0 line spacing.
2. Write in plain Chinese. Don’t use a lot of jargons.
3. Please attach an assignment cover page with word count. Submit it as a separate file from your assignment.
4. Type your assignment in MS Word. Submit a Word Doc or PDF. No other file types are acceptable.
5. Please include page numbers.
6. Submit by 23:59, Friday Sep 12 in Week 6 on Canvas.
7. You may apply for simple extension via Usyd online portal if needed.
8. Failure to follow any of the above instructions may result in minor mark deductions.
Your case analysis will be assessed on the following criteria:
• Extensiveness of research and originality and relevance of topic 3%
• Clearly stated thesis of analysis and depth discussion of issues 3%
• Evidence of personal perspective and persuasiveness: sufficient support of 6% argument
• Structure of the writing, grammar, expressions and references 3%
