Requirement:
Select a company quoted on the London Stock Exchange (FROM THE LIST OF COMPANIES
PROVIDED) and acquire its annual report and other relevant information from independent and reliable sources. Produce a report, using accounting information, market opinions, and relevant academic &
business literature. Your report should have the following structure:
a) Evaluate the strategy adopted by the company by referring to the industrial sector in which it operates.
b) Based on its accounts, assess the financial performance of the company with regard to the
strategic position identified in part (a). You may compare the financial performance with a suitable competitor. Explain special items/transactions involving significant sums that you may have identified if applicable.
c) Examining market data (e.g., share price and related data), forecasts and independent
commentaries by market analysts to assess the financial potential and risk of the company.
d) Briefly consider the capability of the board of directors, the strategic position in (a), its progress in (b), and the market’s view in (c) - and form a reasoned judgement as to whether you would invest in this company.
Cautionary Points
1) Students should avoid choosing the same company with another group. A list of ‘AIM’ companies has been uploaded to Blackboard, from which students can choose their case company.
2) Make sure you reference all sources of data, theory and opinion irrespective of whether they are from academic or empirical sources.
3) Please append the three main financial statements (Income Statement, Statement of Financial
Position & Cashflow Statement) of the most recent year to your report. Failure to do so will result in a penalty of 5 marks.
