BIOL275
Practice Report (due: 28th Oct 2024, 13:30)
*This report is formative (i.e. does not count towards your grade for the module).
You have been given the sequencing reads from an unknown virus extracted from a human patient.
You are expected to:
- Cover the background and rationale for your investigation in the introduction.
- Perform. the bioinformatics analysis from Practical 1 and describe the methods and results. Key points to cover:
o Assemble genome
o Annotate genome
o Compare genome to information in biological databases
o Methods should be in sufficient detail such that the reader can replicate what you did (e.g. indicate your sample ID, software versions, analysis settings… etc)
- Discuss and give reasoning as to:
o What the virus may be
o Whether it might be a case of zoonotic transmission
o Any other relevant discussion
- Adhere to Havard style. referencing and a formal report structure (please refer to grade descriptors for details)
Please utilize all bioinformatics analysis covered by Practical 1 to complete this report. Structure the report to include introduction, methods, results and discussion. Since bioinformatic outputs can be large, do not include all outputs; instead, include screenshots of key outputs. Please show evidence that all bioinformatics analysis covered by Practical 1 has been performed through results figures (at least 1 screenshot from output of each tool), as well as describing any key results within the main text.
Word count: 500 words (+/- 10%), excluding the Reference section and table/figure legends
Table/figure legend word count: 100 words max per figure/table. No limit on the number of tables/figures. Please keep them reasonable size (legible when printed on A4 and nothing larger a page).
