· Head to YouTube, explore some channels, and select one to use for this task. Write down the name of this channel.

· Navigate to the homepage of this YouTube channel and then go to the videos tab and copy the URL for this page. Your URL should have ‘videos’ at the end, and have a structure like this: https://www.youtube.com/@LaughingSamoans/videos

· Take a screenshot (snip) of the first few video thumbnails and paste it into your answers.

· Consider visual features of the YouTube thumbnails, such as colours, typography, or certain images. Write one sentence that explains how YouTube video thumbnails from this channel vary in terms of visual features. You can use this framework to describe the variation in two groups: “YouTube video thumbnails on the channel (your chosen YouTube channel) either contain … or …”

For this question, you need to use visual features of the video thumbnails only to create ONE new categorical variable.

· Copy the sentence identifying how visual features of the thumbnails vary from Q1.

· Head to the YouTube Videos app (note: this is not the same link as in Q1). Search for the most recent videos from your chosen YouTube channel by pasting in the url from Q1. You will get around 20 thumbnails.

· Based on your idea of grouping the thumbnails by the visual feature you described in Q1, enter the categorical variable name and names for the two levels (in the red boxes for the headings).

· Sort ALL of the thumbnails into one of the two levels. There should be at least five thumbnails in each group and no thumbnails left over.

Thumbnails will fade when they are sorted. If a thumbnail doesn’t fade when you put it in one of the levels, drag and drop it again.

· Take a screenshot of the first few rows of your sorted thumbnails that shows the variable name and levels. It is OK if your screenshot doesn’t contain all of the thumbnails, but you need to sort all thumbnails.

For this question, you need to use text features of the video titles only to create ONE new numeric variable.

The software guides for working with data in Google Sheets and exploring data in iNZight Lite have step-by-step demonstrations of related skills, and you will see examples of using these technologies in lectures.

· Create a new Google Sheet and use this to create a rectangular data set based on the YouTube videos you have explored. In order to do this, scroll to the bottom of the sorted video thumbnails in the YoutubeVideo data landscape app from Q2, click the “Copy” button and paste everything into the new Google sheet (cell A1 should now have the name of your categorical variable showing).

When copying data in your Google sheet, you need to click cell A1 once. If you double-click the cell, pasting to your sheet will not work properly.

· In addition to the categorical variable you created as part of Q2, you need to create one new variable using the variable title. This variable needs to be numeric. You need to use text features of the video titles to create the new variable. You can use functions within Google sheets to create values for the new variable, or you can enter them by hand.

· Insert a new column to the right of column D, which contains the variable title. Populate this column with the values for your new variable.

· Write down the name of this new variable and explain in one sentence what it measures.

· Publish your Google sheet as a CSV and copy the link produced (make sure when the link is clicked that a CSV file is downloaded).

For this question, you need to use one categorical variable to make a prediction about YouTube videos.

· Copy the visual feature from Q1

· Import your data into iNZight Lite using the CSV link from Q3 and create a visualisation (plot) using just the categorical variable you created in Q2. Copy and paste this plot into your answers.

· Use the Summary tab in iNZight Lite to find the level of this categorical variable that has the highest proportion and record this as a percentage rounded to one decimal place (if there are more than one, just pick one).

· Write a sentence that uses this level and proportion to make a prediction e.g. I predict that YouTube thumbnails from [name of channel] will feature [something] in the thumbnail, since most (x%) of the thumbnails in my data did.
