The prominent element of your work of art is the image of a flower. But not just any flower,it needs to be a flower with a particular name that starts with a particular letter of the alphabet. The assignment is to create one such panel using the exact specifications below.
You should begin by creating the image on paper using conventional art supplies.NOT with software on an iPad Tablet,Computer, etc. It must be by hand.Disregarding this will cost you a lot of points(see rubrics).
Once you have it on paper, scan it into a fle with a scanner or camera device(smart phone). The file format of what you submit must be JPG and the fle must have a name that includes a fle extension that correctly reflects the jpg fle format. After you have saved it on your computer check the fle size.Shoot for a fle size of between 500kB and 4.5mB.
Your letter:please use the letter that is the first letter of your family name(as we see it in Canvas). If that is problematic for you for any reason (no need to justify), then you may select from one of the following letters:e,i, j,o,q,u,V,X.
Flower name: Find a flower whose common name starts with that letter in the English language. You may also use the scientific name(typically derived from latin). This is the flower which you should use as the subject for your artwork.
Preparation-the template: First you print out a template which consists of a sheet shows two rectangles representing the border of your work area. There are three formats available to you(use only one of these):
·pdf fle(this is the best one to use:use the others only if you have a particular reason):Flower Art
Template.pdf ↓
·MS Powerpoint file(Flower Art Template.pptx↓)
·the same files as a keynote(Apple macOS software)file:Flower Art Template.key.↓
DO NOT DRAW ON THIS SHEET!!!Instead lay a regular clean piece of paper over this sheet,so that you can see the rectangles through the paper;darw on this clean piece of paper. If the lines from the template do not show through the clean sheet, then take a black marker and darken the lines on the template so that they show better. You should be able to barely see the lines through the paper.Use paperclips to hold the papers together while you do the artwork.
Doing the flower art:
·As you work on this, please have your paper oriented so that it is in "Portrait"layout (i.e.NOT"Landscape")- this is important -we won't be able to use your work if is wider than tall.Note two rectangles on the tempate:one that is 3.5 inches wide by 4.75 inches tall representing the outside area of the border of your work. The inside rectangles is 2.8 inches wide and 4 inches tall. These rectangles are not needed on the final art .(It is OK to have them on the final art if you consider it a needed element).
·Step 1:on the paper that will be your artwork, find the outside corners of the outer rectangle and use a pencil to put a dot at the exact corners to match the outside rectangle that show through from the template. These four marks are the only required marks that match the template.
·Step 2:Place your letter of the alphabet in the top left corner so that the letter touches the outside rectangle but does not go over the line. The letter should be large enough so that its center sits on the corner of the inner rectangle(see image below).Place the name of the flower in the top margin area between the two rectangles. You may use any font or style. This shows the desired layout in relation to the lines on the template(which you will only barely see on your version;here they appear much more pronounced than you will see them):
·Step 3:Before starting to create your artwork, please decide on a particular artistic style.Note that there are numerous styles and it is entirely up to you what you chose. Please think about it.You have probably seen some artistic styles that you thought might be cool. You are free to adopt whatever style. you want to mimic. This might be something like "impressionism"(e.g.Monet,Manet,etc)or "cubism"(e.g.Picasso),etc.;Note that it does not need to be Botanical Art in the manner presented during the lecture;but using that style. would be fine.
·Your work should show evidence of invested effort, skills and interest.
·The flower that you selected should be in the image and should be botanically correct.
·When done, place your name in the bottom right corner, between the two(imaginary)rectangles.
·Last step after completing your artwork:scan into an electronic image file:
。There are resources on campus that will facilitate this. For example:the campus library; Many of the photocopiers that you have access to will also scan to a fle and perhaps even email that to you(but if you use this,be sure that the scan is in colon .If the scanner allows you to scan only a particular rectangular area, then scan only the area within the outer rectangles(i.e.3.5 inches wide and 4.75 inches tall); alternately scan the whole page and use image editing software to crop. The resolution should be around 300 dpi so that using it on a printer will result in an image that is not blurry.
。You may use your smartphone or tablet and specifically note that some apps are well suited:for example the Google drive app has a scan feature which will do the job wellbecause it can actually straighten out your image if it is not entirely straight. There are other apps that do this well. The important thing here is for you to learn to do it.
◎ You may engage others to help you get the scan, as long as you learn how to do it yourself also. You must do the art itself by your own hand, regardless of how bad an artist you think you are.
· The filename of the file that you submit should start with your letter and must also include the correct file extension.
·Retain your paper version;I may request it.In case it is not 100%clear:you must do this assignment by creating original art on paper.
Points: This assignment will gain you up to 15 points.Note that we can tellfrom your submission how much
work you invested and the typical point total would be about 10 points for something that is of moderate
quality;15 points would only be given to something that looks outstanding and possibly worth framing.Clearly a 4th-grader could do the assignment, but you will be disappointed with your score if your artistic capabilities have not progressed since then(is that even possible?).
Learning Objectives:Everything in PLSO06 is designed with specifc learning objectives. In this assignment the student learns to craft a work of art which has some specific objectives in terms of quality(as specifed above) and floral accuracy. While there is instruction on botanical art,it is not required in this assignment. In doing this assignment, the student learns to see a particular flower in relation to its anatomical features. At the same time, the student learns to appreciate the beauty of the chosen flower. While there is no specific objective that this exercise would turn a non-artist into an artist (although that is not ruled out),there are many times in all professions where a college graduate is asked to generate some detail drawing as part of a report to help illustrate a point.Being able to accomplish this requires skills that are part of this exercise(eg scanning, image editing, etc).
