AES08: Integrated writing

Weighting: 15% (20% for Science students)

Completed in: Term 2 Exam Week

Task overview

The integrated writing is a short answer task that extends the AES03 Integrated Short Answer Task by providing students with 3-4 input texts of up to 1500 words in total. It is a reading into writing task that supports students with developing the academic skill of incorporating source information in writing.

Students will receive three to four short input texts of up to 1500 words in total and a short answer writing question. Students are required to read the texts, select information from those texts that is relevant to the question, and then synthesise the information from the texts to support a written 300-word answer to the prompt.

Task Purpose

The task aims to support you with developing students’ ability to use source information in writing – this is an important academic skill necessary at university. The task assesses student’s ability to:

Read for a specific purpose

Select information from written text relevant to a specific purpose

•     Organise information selected from sources

•     Integrate / synthesise source information into a short written response to a given prompt

•     Paraphrase source information

•     Use appropriate in-text citation

Write developed paragraphs with appropriate supporting evidence

The integrated writing task prompts are focused on explanation and evaluation of solutions to support the development of the organisation and language necessary for the proposal of a solution required in the AES10 Research Essay.

Instructions

Students receive 3-4 short reading texts of up to 1500 words length in total

Students simultaneously receive a short answer prompt

•     Example prompts include: Explain two benefits of (solution X)…..; Explain a benefit and a limitation of (solution X)

•    Students should read the texts and make notes of information relevant to the prompt

•    Students then write a 300 word response to the prompt (2-3 paragraphs) incorporating supporting information from the sources

Sample response

Explain two benefits of vegetarianism as a solution to the problems caused by overconsumption of meat.

There should be a reduction in the level of meat consumption globally as it directly causes numerous negative environmental impacts. Contrary to popular belief, climate change and industrial animal farming are closely related. It is estimated that the food system produces around 20-30% of the world's GHG emissions (Friesan 2019), with 14% produced by animal farming (Bryant, 2019). By shifting consumers to vegetarian diets, the number of farmed animals can be reduced and thus the amount of emissions and changes to the climate globally can be greatly reduced. In addition to climate change, industrial farming also causes land degradation. The rapid expansion of pastures for grazing animals and to grow grains to feed animals has resulted in deforestation (Bonnet et al., 2020). Minimising animal farming by shifting to more plant-based diets can help reduce the number of forests being destroyed to graze livestock and allow for environmental sustainability. By reducing the amount of farmed animals, multiple environmental issues such as GHG emissions and deforestation can be reduced.

Meat consumption should also be kept at a minimum as it leads to serious health issues. Much of the farmed animals' meat is processed for consumption The consequences of processing these meats can be devastating, as processed meats contain saturated fatty acids, and lead to high cholesterol (Bonnet et al, 2020). Consuming only vegetarian foods is one of the multiple ways to replace the meats provided by farmed animals. Vegetarian diets have proved to be associated with the reduction of chronic health conditions that include, but are not limited to, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Hence, converting to a vegetarian diet allows for a lower likelihood of diseases, and a greater chance of living longer (Bryant 2019, Friesan 2019).By replacing meat-based diets with vegetarian diets, the number of processed foods and their unhealthy effects can be avoided. farmed animal meats lead to various health issues and vegetarian alternatives can replace meats and reduce the incidence of these issues while also leading to a reduction in the environmental impacts of intensive animal farming.
