INTRODUCTION:

This module will introduce and encourage you to explore contemporary fashion styling, fashion photography, visual communication and professional creative practice within the fashion industry.  Utilising your research techniques and methodologies drawn from the Introduction to Research and Fashion Contexts units, you will develop your own fashion-focused creative outcomes through the application of research, critical evaluation and creative experimentation.

ASSIGNMENT (100% of final grade)

6-image magazine layout and Digital Portfolio PDF (2500 words)

Learning Outcomes: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and D1 (please see below for more details on this)

You will hand in 1 x A3 landscape PDF. The PDF will have 8 sections:

Section 1: 6-image fashion editorial for a magazine

-This will comprise 6 fashion photographs that you will style. and photograph using either a phone or a camera. Each picture will contain a different look (outfit) so that there are at least 6 different looks in the editorial.

-You will base the fashion editorial on ONE of the three following themes: Denim / Coquette / Abstract

-The photographs must be carefully created in the style. of a particular magazine. The magazine must be from the following list: Love, Wonderland, Numero, Purple, W, Pop, Luncheon, Dazed & Confused, i-D, Double, The Gentlewoman, Marfa, Italian Vogue.

-You will use Adobe InDesign to lay out the pages in the same style. as your chosen magazine. This will include the typography and any other design elements your magazine uses for its editorials; it should look as though it comes from your chosen magazine.

Section 2: Research of your chosen magazine’s demographic and target market

(max 800 words+charts+tables+images)

-In this section you will use a range of sources to explain the magazine’s target demographic, advertiser profile and distribution.

-Try to establish:

· How the magazine markets itself. For example, its use of social media, content creation, special editions, and other channels.

· What is the magazine’s core demographic. For smaller publications where demographic information isn’t widely available, you will need to analyse the magazine’s subject matter, featured products, style. and advertisers to draw conclusions about the target market.

Section 3: Analysis of the magazine’s visual style

(max 800 words+images)

-In this section you will show layouts and images from the magazine. You will use them to analyse and explain:

· the styling and art direction

· layout and typography

· the photography style

Section 4: development work

(max 800 words)

-In this section you will show the development of your own idea for a shoot, based on one of the three themes given above.

-You will include a range of visual sources that have inspired or influenced your shoot

-These may come from film, TV, photography, music, fashion, art or poetry.

-Alongside showing these visual references, you will write about how they have shaped your idea.

Section 5: Concept board

-This is where you’ll show a detailed concept board of your shoot concept.

-You will also show a plan for each of your 6 photos (a shot plan). This will include a drawing or mock-up of what the pose and composition of the photo will be, along with details of what the clothes will be.

-Remember, your shoot needs to be appropriate for your chosen magazine. It should conform. to its style. and be appealing to the audience you identified in section 2.

Section 6: Test shoots

-In this section you’ll include 4 test shoots. This will include test shoots performed in class, as well as tests of your own concept.

Section 7: Outtakes and Behind-the-scenes

(images)

-To help show that your work isn’t generated by AI, you will include photographs of you interacting with the model on your shoots.

-You must also include outtake images to support your submission. These are photographs that you took during the shoot that you decided not to include in your final editorial.

-After the submission, you must keep all your unedited photos, including all outtakes, in case we need to see them to check the metadata.

Section 8: List of references and list of figures

(not included in word count)

-Every written and visual source must be cited here.

-You must use Harvard referencing to cite all the sources in your work, including images.

You will submit your PDF online via Turnitin by 4pm on 8th May 2025.

The PDF must be created in Adobe InDesign.
