Design Brief

Description in words:

You have previously been asked to design a PCB for your Individual PCB Design Task.  In this CAD Individual Design Task, you should design a simple enclosure for the PCB to be 3D Printed using Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) or Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) with polylactic acid (PLA). The enclosure should include mounting holes, and supports for your circuit board, as well as holes for the circuit board’s power supply (barrel jack), input signal through an edge mounted JST connector, and output through three JST connectors. It should be possible to open the enclosure to access the circuit board.

Key specifications:

The enclosure should be manufacturable using FFF/FDM using PLA as a material.

Size: The enclosure should be designed to hold your PCB Individual Design task board. (A reminder of the detailed specs for this are below.)

The enclosure walls should be designed to balance strength and manufacturing time. Minimum wall width 2 mm.

Consider adding fillets and struts to add stability to your design.

The enclosure should include holes/mounting for the following features

•    Input power should enter the enclosure through a barrel jack.

•    Control signals should enter the enclosure using a 5 way panel mount JST connector (such as S5B-XH-A(LF)(SN))

•    Power should leave the enclosure using three JST S2B PH K S 2 way connectors.

•   The enclosure should include mounting holes and supports for your circuit board. The

board shall be mounted using 4 M3 mounting holes. These should be sited in the four corners of the board, 5mm from each edge.

The enclosure should have chamfers on external edges to give a more ergonomic design, and input and output port placement should be logical.

Specific requirements for your individual design

You should design your enclosure so that it fits the size of the PCB designed as your PCB Individual Design Task. As a reminder, the specification for your PCB design is outlined below.

Board Size:

Please design your PCB to match the following size depending on the last digit of your student number: (i.e. if you student number is 21234567, then the last digit is ‘7’)

wilLast digit = 0, 1 or 2             -> PCB dimensions: 40x60 mm

Last digit = 3, 4 or 5     -> PCB dimensions: 45x55 mm

Last digit = 6 or 7         -> PCB dimensions: 50x50 mm

Last digit = 8 or 9         -> PCB dimensions: 55x45 mm

Ordering of Input Header Connections:

The ordering of the input connection headers is based on the second last digit of your student number: (i.e. if you student number is 21234567, then the second last digit is ‘6’)

Second Last digit = 1 or 3        -> Input Header Connection Order: GND, SD, A, B, C

Second Last digit = 2 or 4        -> Input Header Connection Order: GND, SD, A, C, B

Second Last digit = 5 or 7        -> Input Header Connection Order: GND, SD, B, A, C

Second Last digit = 6 or 8        -> Input Header Connection Order: GND, SD, B, C, A

Second Last digit = 9 or 0        -> Input Header Connection Order: GND, SD, C, A, B

Delivery:

Electronic delivery of project folder, as a .zip, due Thursday Week 9 of Autumn. Include all the files and subfolders that SolidWorks generates. This should include ‘.sldprt’ parts files for the enclosure parts and any imported parts, ‘.sldasm’ assembly files for the enclosure assembly, .SLDDRW  or PDF drawing files, and exported STL files. You should include annotated drawing files which are exported to PDF format of your enclosure with enough detail to be able to understand and manufacture your design.

If you are using a different CAD software, you should ensure that you include your designs in SolidWorks compatible files (e.g. STEP).

The title of this folder, and your project should be YOUR_NAME_STUDENT_NUMBER.zip

Marking Scheme

3D Modelling + 2D Design Drawings (20 Marks)

The 3D part designs and 3D assembly are clear, and understandable.  The 2D design drawings are clear and include enough detail (annotations, measurements etc) to able to understand and manufacture your design.

Design Specifics (50 Marks)

The enclosure is correct size and has mounting holes suitable to mount the PCB securely. The walls are a sensible thickness to compromise between strength and manufacturing time. The design utilises fillets and/or struts to ensure stability. The design incorporates defined ports for power, input signals, and outputs. The enclosure can be opened to access the circuit board.

Overall (30)

The design meets specifications as per brief, is professional neat and logical, with care taken to ensure ergonomics. The project folder is not a mess, file names are sensible, sheets include names, contains all part, assembly, drawing and manufacturing files to be able to understand and manufacture enclosure and nothing else is amiss.
