Project Title: Design and analysis of a new microgrid for a remote community

Objective:

· To achieve optimal planning of a Microgrid with distributed renewable sources and energy storage,

· To analyse the performance and stability of microgrids under different operating conditions

· To conduct a feasibility analysis of a microgrid for a sustainable performance

You will do a project in a group, but you will submit your report, and final oral presentation individually. You will design a project and pose a question/problem hypothesis. The short description of the project is given below:

Project Description:

Microrgrids are small electrical networks heterogeneously composed of distributed generations (DGs), loads, and energy storage systems. It can operate both in grid connected and islanded mode. One of the main challenging problems associated with the design and control of microgrids is to ensure reliable and stable operations in islanded mode. DGs frequently join and leave the microgrid due to availability and intermittency of renewable energies, such as photovoltaic (PV) units, wind generators.

Suppose a new Microgrid is to be constructed at a small pilot area under a Smart Grid development plan. The Microgrid is currently under planning stage, and the utility company now asks your advice on the designing and reliability analysis of the Microgrid. In this project, you need to choose the correct capacity for the microgrid devices so as to provide the best economic return. Factors which will influence this decision include the feed-in tariff, the electricity consumption profile, wind generation, and the PV generation profile.

The design should satisfy the following constraints:

(i) Voltage variation within ±6%

(ii) Stable for N-1 criteria (one device outage)

(iii) Frequency is within 50±0.5 Hz

(iv) Economic and reliable
