MACE 20062/20092 (Academic year: 2024-25)
Modelling and Simulation – II (CFD)
CFD Coursework Guidelines
Report deadline
Check blackboard for official deadline dates.
Note
Blackboard is the only source of official information. Any information not available through blackboard should not be considered.
Note on academic integrity
The work submitted for grading should be your own. It is a violation of academic integrity to both give and receive someone else’s work. If you are sharing your work with your friend/peer, you are equally liable for the violation. Every report will be automatically checked for plagiarism from all internet sources and Manchester based reports from this and previous years. So please do not directly copy-paste from others reports (this or previous years) either. Any violations will be reported.
Please note that if you submit excel sheets and screenshots of someone else’s work, this can be automatically picked up by detection tools. Such detection is possible even with manipulations made over existing images/data. This will be a violation of academic integrity and will be reported for academic malpractice.
Learning objectives
1. Learn to identify the physics that are relevant to a complex engineering system
2. Learn to simplify the said complex engineering system by knowledgeably making assumptions regarding relevant physics
3. Learn to identify potential geometric simplifications for modelling and simulation purposes
4. Learn to use computational techniques and tools to analyse and simulate the engineering systems
5. Learn to validate results using benchmarking
Marks
1. It is pertinent to note that this is an individual assignment.
2. The overall CFD coursework is worth 25% of your total unit mark.
Report format
A report has already been provided (Report.pdf). In addition to the report, a datasheet (Data.xlsx) is provided that will enable you to get the dimensions against your name. If your name is missing, you need to let the lecturer know before leaving for Easter holidays.
You are required to read the report and fill in the blanks. All the missing items have been marked with red text. There are four parts to the submission that needs to be submitted together in a single .zip file:
1. Part - I: The missing equations, parameter numbers etc.
a. There are 13 places where items are missing and need to be completed.
b. Each item will be marked for 2 points.
c. Only the answers (not the additional text) need to be hand-written and submitted as a scanned PDF only.
2. Part II: Two tables, one each for mesh convergence and effect of Reynolds numbers on lift and drag co-efficient.
a. The table needs to be written in an excel sheet and the excel sheet needs to be submitted.
b. A sample excel sheet has been provided that can be used to fill and submit.
3. Part - III: Screenshots of velocity and pressure contours
a. This needs to be submitted showing the timestamp. This can simply be the wall clock on the computer like shown below.
b. There are four Reynolds number at which velocity and pressure contour screenshots are required. Each screenshot will be marked for 2 points each.
c. It is important to note that you would be reported for academic malpractice if the screenshots are not your own work.
4. Part - IV: One conclusion section of 100 words
a. This needs to clearly highlight the outcome of the study and one’s own understanding and comprehension of mesh convergence, error analysis and simulations.
b. It is recommended that the students refer to the submitted materials in their conclusions.
Marking rubric
• Part - I (26/100): Each item to be marked for 2 points
• Part - II (30/100) : Each table to be marked for 15 points.
• Part - III (24/100): Each screenshot to be marked for 3 points.
• Part - IV (20/100): The conclusion to be 20 points.
Submission format
Submit one single .zip file that comprises of all the above files.
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the .zip file is not corrupted. If it is corrupted, then the CW will be automatically marked as zero.
Naming convention and file formats
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that naming convention is strictly followed. If not, the part of the submission will be automatically marked as zero.
• Overall zip file: All the below four items need to be zipped into a single file for submission. Please submit only the zip file. The name of the zip file needs to be “Sl. No.zip” where “Sl.No.” can be found beside your name in the Data.xlsx datasheet provided.
• Part - I: Name of the scanned PDF should be “Sl. No_1.pdf”
• Part - II: Name of the excel sheet should be “Sl. No.xlsx”
• Part - III: Names of the screenshots should be “Sl. No00X.png” . Only acceptable format is .png. Replace X with the screenshot number.
• Part - IV: Name of the PDF should be “Sl. No_2.pdf”
