MUSIC 455 (A1) – Fall 2024
Music Theory V
ASSIGNMENT #1: Due Tuesday, October 22, 9:30 a.m.
12-tone analysis of Anton Webern’s String Quartet, Op.28, 1st movement.
1. Figure out what series-forms are used in this movement. Two hints:
a) P0 is the first twelve pitches. Follow the instrumental lines to determine order among simultaneous pitches (“connect the dots”).
b) Series-forms may overlap by dyads or tetrachords with the previous series.
2. What aspect in the construction of P0 gives rise to the common intervals so prominent in the score? Detail a pitch-class set analysis of the P0 row’s tetrachords, trichords and hexachords.
3. Construct a matrix based on P0. As a result of your findings in question 2, how many DIFFERENT rows are there in the matrix, and WHY?
4. Label all row-forms in the 1st movement. Use colours to differentiate between overlapping and adjacent row-forms.
